01/01/2005: "And now for something completely different!"
As I may have mentioned before, crochet was really my first fiber art. Even before I learned to sew at age 8, I was crocheting. My first crochet project was a stuffed elephant toy of my own design! I wish I still had that little guy!
Anyhow, I was wanting a new, somewhat more involved project for the New Year. Some blog readers will remember the Aisling baby sweater that I designed and knit for last New Year's "involved project". Of course, the fact that my sister in law was due with a baby any day helped me to decide on that project!
I was thinking about what to knit this weekend and nothing that I currently had on the needles was striking my fancy for a long weekend's work, so I made a trip to the Legacy store, our local hospice thrift shop that sells only craft related items (I'm so in love with that place!!)
I came away with about a gazillion yards of three ply cotton in a pink/mauve combo for just a few dollars. The cotton really cried out for a crochet project, rather than a knit one for some reason and I roamed around the net until I found the Seraphina Shawl pattern.
I started her last night and have been motoring along. For some reason, crochet comes to me much more easily than knitting. I don't know if it's just more intuitive or what. Anyhow, I'm making good progress and I plan to spend this New Year's day in my jammies, crocheting this shawl! I'm a little concerned that the final shawl will be too heavy to wear, this cotton really has a heft to it! I can always drape it on the sofa as a throw if I don't feel like wearing it, otherwise it will be great to go with a spring dress I already own.
Edited on 1-4-05 to say that my fears were valid and this shawl was going to be wayyyyyyyyy too heavy in this yarn so I had to rip it! I started another in some vintage yarn I have in my stash called "Perlette" by Bucilla. I've had a 10 skein bag of this stuff here forever. The yarn and therefore the shawl is a sort of french vanilla color. It'll go nicely with some outfits that I have. As for the cotton yarn, it's lovely and I'll still be looking for a not-so-heavy project to make with it!
Happy New Year to everyone out there in blog land! I hope that this year is peaceful and prosperous for you! *mwah*
