12/07/2005: "Head Games"

So yeah, I haven't been posting regularly, tis the season.
The folks at work are calling me the "hour whore"... They do mean that in the nicest possible way though, I'm sure!
I'm not turning down any job that comes my way. Even the ones with cranky old men who say nasty things to me. If it's work, I'll take it right now!
Post-Vegas poverty and the looming Christmas gift extravaganza have made me lose all semblance of good sense.
In short, I've been working my ass off. I can sleep in January! Right now I need the money, honey!

But... that's not what I'm here today to talk about, nor is my holiday knitting the subject today. (although, I must say, I'm motoring right along. Just need to knit one more hat and one more Christmas stocking. Are you proud of me?)

Anyhow, my topic for today is the songs in my head.
Not necessarily the voices in my head, although I do have those and they DO sometimes sing! Nothing like an angelic choir in your mind to herald the latest completed project, home cooked meal, or getting a parking space at the post office this time of year. (So I have a rich inner life, cut me some slack here, people!)

I'm talking about the songs that you get stuck in your head, for hours, or days, or in particularly trying times, weeks! You know the ones. The embarrassing ones. It's never the COOL songs that get stuck in your head, is it?

I recently had the trifecta of horrible songs going on in my head. The day started out mildly enough with the Green Acres theme song.
As bad head songs go, this isn't the worst. It's kitschy, it's cute, it's not that long, I know all the words. It's also very easy to get people to sing along with you.

Green Acres was inexplicably replaced by the horribly depressing and melodromatic Kenny Rogers favorite... "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" Just try getting anyone to sing along with you on THAT One! You certainly won't be the life of the party. Trust me. After several hours of "Ruby" in my head, I wasn't much fun to be around.

Then, (and this was the cherry on the cake of my day!) I was talking to my sister, who, like me has the habit of pausing in the middle of a sentence because of

a.) Being distracted by something else (oooh, shiny objects!)

b.) Being DONE with the thought and moving on to the next one before finishing the sentence.

c.) Chronic tiredness

d.) General forgetfulness

and most likely

e.) all of the above, simultaneously.
Anyhow, our family is very familiar with the long pause, I'm just sayin.

So, while speaking on the phone, my sister says to me "There's a......." (insert long pause here).
After a suitable amount of time had passed, and no conclusion to the sentence seemed forthcoming, I asked her "There's a what???... A light, over at the Frankenstein place??"

Well, I'm sure you know, any self respecting Rocky Horror geek would have to sing the WHOLE song at that point.
And of course we did. More than once. Oh the shame.
The true horror, that was a WEEK ago and I still have that song in my head.

Help. I need a new song!

I have I Melt with You by Modern English in my head this morning. Maybe you'd like to change over to the RHPS Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me? That could bring on some interesting sing-a-longs ;)
