03/19/2007: "My new girl"

Well, as some of you know, I have this THING for old sewing machines. I know it's not a popular notion with a lot of people, but give me an old, solid metal boat anchor of a sewing machine and I'm happy as a lark. Forget all the fancy stitches and embroidery and shortcuts that the newer machines have, these old girls are what sewing is really about, for me anyhow!

It's nearly impossible to kill one and when they are well kept, they sew like a dream. I'm actually trying to learn more about refurbishing these machines. I have been practicing doing tune ups and such, which is why I bought this machine. (We all know I need another sewing machine like I need a hole in the head!)

Anyhow, I brought this lovely girl home from the flea market yesterday for the princely sum of 15 dollars.
I love this color SO much! As near as I can tell, she was made in about 1968 in the Singer factory at Kilbowie, Scotland.

The location of manufacture should have been a clue, because after getting her all cleaned and oiled up and ready to go, what do I find...

A 220 volt plug! DOH! The joke is on me!

After having a good laugh, and talking to my hubby, it was decided that a $16.99 transformer was in order to convert the voltage, no big deal.

It's a nice thought that someone loved this machine enough to haul her here from the UK. I have no idea how she got to the flea market here in California. Sometimes I wish objects could talk!
